The farm houses a poultry unit where dual purpose birds are reared in backyard production system and intensive system. The farm also houses a hatchery for production of quality day old chicks (Still image provided in farm picture folder) which are supplied to the farmers and also sold out for revenue generation. The farm also houses Piggery unit which produce superior quality Yorkshire piglets (Still image provided in Farm picture folder) for supply to the farmers and sold out for revenue generation. These activities highly complement crop-based activities with livestock integration. Additionally, the Azolla multiplication unit supports sustainable livestock feeding practices.
At the core of Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Lunglei, there is a mission to revolutionize agriculture through practical science. One of its primary objectives is conducting On-Farm Testing and Frontline Demonstrations to validate and introduce innovative technologies directly to the farming community. KVK conducts on- and off-campus training, vocational training, and sponsored programs in disciplines such as Agronomy, Animal Science, Horticulture, Plant Protection, Soil Science, and Home Science. These programs cater to diverse needs, equipping participants with skills for improved productivity and sustainability.
Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Lunglei, serves as a vital link between agricultural research and rural communities. Through its comprehensive extension activities, KVK empowers farmers, farm women, rural youth, and extension functionaries to adopt innovative and sustainable practices.
Activities like field visits by scientists, farmers-scientist interactions,Exposure visit, field day and the grand kisan mela (Exhibition images) foster collaboration and knowledge-sharing. Specialized camps—such as animal health and vaccination, plant health, and soil testing—ensure targeted support for both crops and livestock. KVK disseminates timely information via Kisan Mobile Advisory services, covering crops, livestock, weather, and market trends. KVK also observes and celebrates important days, aligning its activities with central flagship programs. The center actively supports various central and state schemes, ensuring farmers benefit from these initiatives. Through research publications, folders, leaflets, training manuals, and expert lectures, KVK disseminates valuable knowledge across agricultural and allied sectors, strengthening its role as a resource hub for rural development.
KVK Lunglei is driving impactful agricultural transformation under two projects: the National Initiative on Climate Resilient Agriculture (NICRA) and Attaining and Retaining Youth in Agriculture (ARYA).
Under the NICRA project, KVK Lunglei is helping farmers adapt to climate change by focusing on crops and livestock. Improved crop varieties resistant to drought and pests have been introduced, ensuring stable yields despite erratic weather. Livestock management practices, including crossbreeding, heat stress management and disease prevention, are empowering farmers to sustain productivity. Through NICRA, farmers are not just surviving climate challenges but thriving.
KVK Lunglei also spearheads the ARYA project to engage and empower rural youth in agriculture, fostering entrepreneurship in diverse enterprises. From piggery and poultry farming to vermicomposting, ARYA equips young entrepreneurs with technical skills and financial assistance. This has turned agriculture into a viable and profitable career choice. Protected cultivation of tomatoes and mushroom production has become game-changers, enabling year-round harvesting and higher incomes. Honey production, another key enterprise, is generating income while promoting sustainable practices. With NICRA and ARYA, KVK Lunglei is building a resilient agricultural ecosystem and inspiring rural youth to lead the way. Together, they are sowing the seeds of a sustainable and prosperous future.
